Anyone here a Muslim? Question about culture for you.
My job is about customer service, and I on occasion will have to walk around/open doors for people.
I had a customer recently, who was from Kuwait, who did not want to walk through the door I was holding open for him. I am just curious as to why. I was not/am not offended, and want to make sure I wasn't offending them. Customer was nice, but our cultures are clearly very different.

If he was from Kuwait, maybe he was waiting for you to open the door wide enough so he could drive his Lamborghini through?

I've been a Muslim for the past 22 Years, and i think he just a bit weird?
Is your customer is a girl?
Or maybe he just want to open the door by themselves.

I've known Muslims since I was a little tyke, and I've never had this happen. Could it be a local custom? I'm no expert on muslims and customs, but there's one thing I've picked up from my muslim friends, and that is to shake hands every time I meet someone, regardless if I've know him for years.

This thread was started honestly, but I detect it will not end well.

No, not a girl. If so, hairiest girl I've ever seen.
Okay. I just thought it odd, and wondered why/if it was a Muslim thing.
We also did not shake hands, as I normally always do, when I was finished with my services.
Perhaps just his family was super strict about contact with others/non-Muslims? I know there are sects that consider westerners inferior/unclean. Not bothered by it, just wanted to know so I can avoid an awkward situation in the future.
Thanks.

It's more of a middle eastern thing than a Muslim thing, I think. It's like a sign of weakness or something.
Watch this bit of hilarity:

That might be true, but I am not in any way trying to make this into a hate thread. I am honestly curious, and do not live around a large middle-eastern/Muslim population nor do I interact with them on a frequent basis.
Just trying to learn about some fellow humans here.

Well, normally we muslims are very open with everybody. maybe that's just his family tradition.
Yes there's a rule that you can't shake your hand except with other man (or women with other women), but i think that's just a family tradition.

I think it might be a dominant kind of thing. I have read that some men from far away macho cultures like to hold the doors open for others rather than have them held open for them.

You can't as far as I can tell. I have no idea why they thought it was a good idea to remove all formatting options for posting on mobile. This is 2014, smartphones can handle a full web page.

The comments here make me lol. Its not a Muslim thing, its an Arab thing; its a sign of respect to offer someone to go through first.

So, he felt like I was trying to be superior by opening the door for him?
We do that just to be polite.

If that's the case, I don't think he was trying to belittle you, it's just a silly machismo thing.
Like wearing pink. He doesn't need YOU To wear it, just as long he DOESN'T
